Famous Sichuan green tea varieties

Ever wanted to take a look at the definitive list of the most famous Sichuan green tea varieties? Here you have it. Of all of China’s tea producing provinces, Sichuan is certainly one of the most prestigious. Out of the fifty plus tea varieties mentioned by Lu Yu (陆羽) in his Book of Tea (茶经), 18 come from Sichuan.

Nowadays, the province remains a prime tea producer. Mengding Ganlu, or “Mengding Sweet Dew”, is probably its most famed tea variety. Indeed, it is even considered one of China’s Ten Famous Teas. There are, however, many more outstanding green teas produced in the province.

In the following paragraph, we have listed them alphabetically. We give you the Pinyin, Chinese, and English names of the most famous modern green tea varieties from Sichuan. For each variety, we also indicate its place of production.

  • Bashan Queshe (巴山雀舌): “Ba Mountain Bird’s Tongue” from Ba Mountain in Wanyuan City.
  • Emei Maofeng (峨眉毛峰): “Emei Hairy Tips” from Fengming Township in Ya’an City.
  • Emei Xueya (峨眉雪芽): “Emei Snow Buds” from Emei Mountain in Emei City.
  • Mengding Ganlu (蒙顶甘露): “Mengding Sweet Dew” from Mengding Mountain in Ya’an City.
  • Mengding Shihua (蒙顶石花): “Mengding Stoneflower” from Mengding Mountain in Ya’an City.
  • Qingcheng Xueya (青城雪芽): “Qingcheng Snow Buds” from Qingcheng Mountain in Dujiangyan.
  • Wenjun Lücha (文君绿茶): “Wen Jun’s Green Tea” from Nanbao Mountain in Qionglai City.
  • Zhuyeqing (竹叶青): “Bamboo Green” from Emei Mountain in Emei City.
